About Hilton Village Hall

Statement from the Committee.
We get some lovely comments about our Village Hall in Hilton. Everybody is always very impressed with all the rooms that we have and how clean and up to date the decor is. But how many of you know that it is a charity? Or that is managed by the Trustees, who are volunteers, who employ the Caretakers and the Hall Manager?
The Village Hall has been a charity for a number of years but is now also a company limited by guarantee; this dual registration is seen as best practice for village halls up and down the country. Many, many volunteers and local benefactors as well as Hilton Parish Council have worked tirelessly to maintain the viability of our Village Hall.
Most of our funding for day-to-day running costs such as wages, heating and lighting comes from hire charges for the rooms. We now have over 40 clubs and activities that use our Hall and this is changing week by week. But for any improvements or repairs that we make to the building or capital expenditure, we rely heavily on grants from South Derbyshire District Council, Hilton Parish Council and generous local benefactors such as Don Amott. This is why our name changed last year after the main hall was refurbished to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the passing of Don Amott Senior. Funding from developers is also crucial; this is then match-funded from bodies like Sports England. This is how the current Village Hall was funded when it was built in 1998. Since then the building has been expanded under Phase One of our development plan and we also have Phase Two on the cards which will include another large hall and a café area.
We employ a Full time Caretaker, a Part time Caretaker and a Part time Hall Manager. The hall is so busy that we could not manage without them. We are a not-for-profit organisation, but with staff, a large building and grounds, we have additional responsibilities compared with other charities which do not and always have to think of the bottom line.
There are eight of us who are Trustees who manage the hall between us. We are all volunteers and take no payment for the work we do. We are always on the lookout for others who are as passionate as we are about building a sense of community in Hilton. Our monthly meetings are open to residents of Hilton and users of the Village Hall. If committees are not your thing, maybe you have skills that you could donate in kind to save us on our maintenance costs; help us run events or keep the planting tidy around the hall.
Or you could come and support events at the hall and follow us on Facebook.
